Hello Piva. Thank you for agreeing to answer my questions. Between 2021 and 2024, you released a large number of albums under different aliases such as Medgewya, Keymage, and Carmilla's Tears. One can hear many different influences throughout your work. What kind of musician are you? When did you start recording music?
Hello, thank you for having me in your Zine. As far as which kind of musician I'm I tend to don't define me a musician rather a composer or an overall creative. I have a large collection of instruments but I can only play the guitar somewhat good. I started making music when I was in my first year of High School. A friend of mine introduced me to FL Studio and then I started slowly making music. I think I released my first ever project around that time too. Medwegya was born in the beginning of the second year of High School.
Your music is frenetic and conveys a sense of urgency and spontaneity. What state of mind were you in while making these recordings?
I actually suffered from numerous daily panic attacks at that time. I guess it might be that and overall not seriousness of the project that really gave me freedom.
What is your relationship with classical culture?
I started taking violin and shortly after piano lessons privately at 16 and later entered the conservatory for 2 years. I found Classical studying very fascinating and they for sure enriched my musical and compositional background.
Was “Raw Psychedelic Dungeon Synth Black Metal Manifesto” intended to inspire an even larger wave of artists?
I think it was more intended as a statement on what Medwegya music was but at the same time as a sort of reference point for the genre that was slowly emerging.
What is your perspective on Keller Synth to Tänzelcore?
I do think it is really wrong to categorize Medwegya as Keller Synth. The medwegya project had always been that sort of Punkish Black Metal with Psychedelic and Ambient elements. I did however make Keymage for the purpose of trying to make some Keller Synth. I discovered Keller Synth from the revival of 2021/22 but I liked it at first glance, and now I do think it is a low effort, low originality genre.
What influence did Abysmal Specter and Grime Stone Records have on your work?
He had a huge influence for the project, I would even say it was my main inspiration. I loved his project and his label, I even asked multiple times for a some sort of collaboration without any positive reply. Now unfortunately I don't like his new music, got bland and repetitive, maybe for a public that I'm not, but he seems getting a lot of numbers and a loyal fanbase so good for him.
Was this the end of that musical journey or fear of becoming a caricature?
Both suggestions are correct. I opened the project for fun and it wasn't fun anymore. I wanted to make more serious music and my audience and project weren't the place for that.
Is Keller Synth dead or being appropriated?
I think it was a trend of years ago. When I was in the scene with Keymage I always thought this, the hype will fade, sooner or later. Since I don't like it I don't listen to it but it seems it will always have a small fanbase and that is enough to bring more music in the scene. I think Keller Synth is a genre that wants and benefits from being a little niche, while Dungeon Synth has now lost all its magic and it is as popular and known as ever.
Why did you disappear from social media?
I really had to take care of myself and my mental health. Medwegya was annoying me and socials aren't really a thing I like but you know, when you are an artist it is mandatory.
What are your current musical perspectives?
As now I'm not releasing music anymore, it sits on my hard disk but it is fine with it. After the closing I had some album commissions which I really had fun doing. I'm now studying violin again. I don't listen to much music anymore. I've reached a point where I feel like I've heard it all before. I stick with classical music, in particular Philip Glass.
